Thinking of upgrading. need help!!!!!
« on: 06 Sep 2007, 05:40:27 pm »

Hello all.

I have a quick question. My main Boinc crunching rig is getting old, (Athlon XP 2200+) I was thinking of getting either a Athlon 64 dual core 4400 or a Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180.

Which one would you recommend and what would be my the rac of each system if it was to run  Seti with a optimized client 24/7.

Thanks.  Grin

I'd say about 1500 RAC either way.

If you are looking for higher RAC, consider Intel Core 2 processor, such as E4XXX or E6XXX series processors.

Thanks for the advice.

I'd like to go for the E6XXX series but alas my budget wont stretch that far.  Cry
Currently the processors that I mentioned are currently around the £50 mark near where I live.

Core 2 Duo processors are highly overclockable so you could gain some more speed for free.

In various forums there are posts of people running their "low" E2xxx over 3Ghz.

Look around for which Core 2 Duo is more easily overclocked that  will give you more bang for your buck/quid.

Bottom line.....if Seti crunching is one of your priorities, get a Core 2.  You can get an E2140 for about $75.00 (US)  and it should crunch the shorts off of any AMD in it's price range.

If I had a pick, I would strip other computer components and get E4400 (same price as E4300) at $125 street.   RAC-wise, it will be worth it.

are you doing a custom build from a company such as dell? or are you going to build it yourself?

If you are going to buy from a company look at www.gotapex.com for any current deals on computers

you can also look at www.delloutlet.com for deals...this is where they sell the misconfigured, refurbished and "scratch and dent"...these are the systems that have been used, astetically damaged (usually the boxes) and they can't sell them at the regular price...all of them are factory checked and then resold at great deals

here is one on sale right now in the "scratch and dent category

Vostro 200 Slim Tower: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6600 (2.40GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 1066FSB)
Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate

System Price : $609.00 (US)

it is definately worth looking into
