I have installed Alex Kan's latest App:
- Linux 64 bit AK v8.0 SSSE3x (Intel Only)
On:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
running:
Linux Ubuntu 2.6.24-19-generic (64bit)
I find that this APP can be up to 50% SLOWER than the previous APP I was running from the same website.
The app was:
Linux 64bit 2.2
Has anybody had the same problem?
Nevica

I was member of the testing crew for that optimized application version. No, we never saw such an bad outcome with the release version. Could you please give some more info on your problem, like link to your hosts workunit list at the seti@home website, so we can have a look and compare the resulttimes your host produces. Do you have any other programms running that do use your computers resources very intensive (a server) ? Does your computer possibly overheat and therefor throttle its speed ?

There have been several replies to the equivalent threads on the SETI number crunching boards, where nevica (using the handle Daniel S. Gandolfo) has posted the same issue in two adjacent threads, believing either the app or his CPU may be at fault.
In fact, the general consensus is that his recently-updated Ubuntu 2.6.24-19-generic (64bit) is running 'nice' processes at half-speed, to save power.
BOINC crunchers have been bitten by this one before, and no doubt they will be again in the future.

In my case it was just powernowd which is running as a service by default (and gets (re)started every time you log in gdm). Just switch it off and you get full speed. As my machine is a dedicated cruncher I aptitude-purged it. mic.
