[Announcements] Windows Installer 0.37 Release
by Jason G
|
28 Aug 2010, 07:06:31 am |
Updated Unified Installers, v0.37 for Windows are at: http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php?module=Downloads;catd=9
For Windows 32 & 64 bit (Nt/XP/Vista/Win7, x86 & x64 versions), changes since last release (v0.36) are:
- Fermi compatible Cuda 3.0 build introduced. Supports all Cuda enabled GPUs (theoretically) - Slightly lowered video RAM Usage. Should run more happliy on integrated GPUs and lower VRAM cards. - Minimum driver version 197.13+ (256+ series recommended, Current 258.96 WHQL driver highly reommended ) - V12 builds (both VLARKill & noKill) are deprecated. - reduced susceptibility to '-12' errors over all prior releases (stock & opt). They still occur, but fairly rarely. - Some mild Fermi optimisations applied. The reliability and performance make this the currently recomended build for Fermi. - Some internal restructuring & testing of experimental code, applicable to future optimisation (All Cuda GPUs)
For Windows 98/ME: - No changes. nVidia does not support Cuda on these operating systems, so no changes are applicable. Installer revision remains at last release 0.36.
WARNINGS: - As always USE at YOUR OWN RISK, and 'Your mileage may vary' - A Cuda Installation will install application support for 6.08(cuda), 6.09(cuda23) , and 6.10(cuda_fermi) app_versions. Which one Boinc actually chooses to mark yourr work doesn't matter, the tasks are all the same. Unlike stock, this build is intended to run on a wide range of hardware, so all versions are the same. This has consequences if your current tasks cache is marked with something other than any of the 3 stock standard version/plan_class labels, in that you would need to drain your cache first, to avoid losing work.
- Though not 'essential', <flops> app_info entries are highly 'recommended', but this installer doesn't put them in. We haven't come up with a good way for the installer to do this automatically yet, but when we do you can be sure there'll be another installer update.
Known Issues: - Not Comaptible with Marius' Rescheduler 1.9. It is recommended to either stop rescheduling (due to server changes) or use Fred's variant which allows prevention of '-177' errors. Those errors are a feature of server side changes to the way task elapsed tiimes are estimated, rather than internal to the science application. Fred's variant has some support to prevent these errors if they become a problem for you.
FAQ - - Todo (Keep this post bookmarked) - Will be added here as your questions arise, so please check back to see if your issues have been answered.

27 Feb 2010, 09:08:36 am |
Beta Test Installers, v0.35 for Windows are at: http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php?module=Downloads;catd=29
Changes since last Release (v0.2):
For windows 32 (Nt/XP/Vista/Win7, x86 versions), changes since last release (v0.2): - updated AP_SSE to r339 SSE, Astropulse application is updated to a single SSE build, reportedly yielding 5%-25% performance improvement over last release, depending on machine & task characteristics. The SSE build renders prior SSE3 hand-code obsolete. - removed APv5 appinfo entries - removed multibeam 5.28 entries (leaving only 6.03) - For cuda installations Puts only 6.08 app info entries ( but both plan classes still) - Cuda 'detailed' configuration page, which let's you specify v2.2(default) or v2.3 DLLs is used, & whether VlarKill or non-vlarkil application is installed. - Unconditionally (whether cuda install or not) scans client state & converts any 6.09 marked tasks inside seti@Home project to 6.08, for compatibility with resheduler 1.9.
For windows 64 bit (/XP/Vista/Win7, x64 versions),Installer changes since release 0.2: - updated AP to r339 SSE, Astropulse application is updated to a single SSE build, reportedly yielding 5%-25% performance improvement over last release, depending on machine & task characteristics. - Puts both platform entries for all app versions (doubling the app_info), for smooth (fingers crossed) installations on Windows x64.
For Windows 98/ME, changes since last Release (v0.2): - Astropulse application is updated to a single SSE build, reportedly yielding 5%-25% performance improvement over last release, depending on machine & task characteristics. The SSE build renders prior SSE3 hand-code obsolete. - Extra Note: Actually astropulse performance improvement may be significantly more for Windows 98, since a major stock code limitation was discovered and eliminated ( Thanks, Joe Segur) - Older Astropulse v5 is removed (leaving only AstroPusle v5.05) - Multibeam 5.28 app info entries are removed.
Extensive Readme/FAQ, To be developed / updated as we go along.

VERY IMPORTANT!!! Note that correct install of these applications requires ADVANCED SKILLS.
A customized app_info.xml file WILL need to be properly created and edited if you also run a version of the S@H multi beam application (see below "issues & warnings"). Done incorrectly, you may trash your work unit cache and or not be able to receive work.
There will be some known issues and warnings to be aware of:
- As mentioned above, You WILL need to edit or create an appropriate app_info.xml file if you run any combination of Astropulse and Multi-beam applications. - Ensure Boinc & seti@Home applications are already properly functioning on your machine, read carefully the documentation readmes and installation instructions. - Ensure you choose a build that your CPU/OS will support. Ask for help If you need assistance determining this. - FreeBSD users should know how to handle simple executables. No installers are included.
Which version to choose for your Mac ? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CPU/MacOSX-------|<=10.3----|---10.4---|---10.5=>-| ----------------------------------------------------------------------| Core Duo------------|---none-----|----32-----|----32-------| ----------------------------------------------------------------------| Core2 Duo----------|---none-----|----32-----|-32-or-64--| -----------------------------------------------------------------------
- OSX packages contain a simple installer script (adapted of original by Dotsch). More complete installer packages are available by Arkayn HERE
Known issues:
- You can’t start a AP wu with one of the OSX apps (e.g. 10.5+) and restart/continue with the other (e.g. 10.4+). The intermediate files are NOT binary compatible. - In OSX, when updating/switching to new executables, a message will appear that some permissions around BOINC are not correct and it won’t run or restart. Re-installing BOINC with the same version fixes the issue and will not harm work or data. - There is no support for CPUs below SSE2 capability - Borderline OC'ers be aware that you may need to back off to maintain stability, the increased throughput of this application will stress all system components more. - As Always, use these apps AT YOUR OWN RISK.
And most Importantly of all: Thanks to Urs Echternacht for updated source improvements and porting to FreeBSD and OSX, derived from original r112 by Crunch3r, Jason G & Raistmer.
Special thanks once again go to zvonas for motivating the FreeBSD builds, Arkayn and Gecko for OSX alpha testing & all the Lunatics members who performed final Beta testing, for their expertise, input & assistance.
To all of you we value your input and would like to hear from you at Lunatics'

[Announcements] CPU/ATI GPU hybrid AstroPulse_v5.05 5.05 r280 for Windows
by Gecko
|
07 Nov 2009, 10:00:22 am |
HYBRID ATI GPU/CPU Optimized AstroPulse_v505 5.05 for Windows OS (r280)
Two editions available now at Hybrid ATI GPU/CPU AstroPulse for Windows Public Downloads area
Hi Everyone,
A SETI@Home AstroPulse optimized application for Windows has been released for use w/ HYBRID ATI GPU and CPU hardware.
This build uses ATI GPU as coprocessor to perform some part of AstroPulse algorithm on GPU instead of CPU. This will free CPU for other tasks.
Here are individual links for all the initial release builds:
HYBRID ATI/CPU AstroPulse_v505 5.05 for Windows r280 Compatible Science App: Intended for Intel & AMD CPUs with SSE3 capability & ATI Graphics Card, running Windows OS.
1 - Windows AstroPulse_v505, v5.05 SSE3(r280) (ATI GPU + INTEL/AMD)
HYBRID ATI/CPU AstroPulse_v505 5.05 for Windows r280_NO_DOUBLE Compatible Science App: Intended for Intel & AMD CPUs with SSE3 capability & ATI Graphics Card, running Windows OS.
2 - Windows AstroPulse_v505, v5.05 SSE3_NO_DOUBLE(r280) (ATI GPU + INTEL/AMD)
Build source is located HERE
VERY IMPORTANT!!! Note that correct install of these applications requires ADVANCED SKILLS.
A customized app_info.xml file WILL need to be properly created. Done incorrectly, you may trash your work unit cache and or not be able to receive work.
For better use of hardware resources I recommend to use this app as addition to opt CPU SETI MB app (AKv8b) and to take participation into some other project that can make use of ATI GPUs like MilkyWay. Currently it’s possible to run up to 2 app instances per GPU. For a quad with 2 ATI GPUs installed it’s possible to run 4 SETI CPU MB + 4 SETI hybrid AP tasks at once.
Catalyst 9.x drivers required. List of supported GPUs one can see here: http://developer.amd.com/gpu/ATIStreamSDK/pages/ATIStreamSystemRequirements.aspx#cards
Please, take note that NO_DOUBLE modification should be used for GPUs w/o double precision support.
Approximate app_info.xml section that could be used to run this app on SETI project:
<app> <name>astropulse_v505</name> </app> <file_info> <name>ap_5.05_win_x86_SSE3_BROOK_r280.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> <app_version> <app_name>astropulse_v505</app_name> <version_num>505</version_num> <avg_ncpus>0.1</avg_ncpus> <max_ncpus>1</max_ncpus> <coproc> <type>ATI</type> <count>0.01</count> </coproc> <file_ref> <file_name>ap_5.05_win_x86_SSE3_BROOK_r280.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> </app_version>
Please, edit <max/avg_ncpus> and <count> tags values as appropriate for your config. This example taken from host that runs 4 SETI CPU MB + 2 SETI hybrid AP + 2 Milkyway ATI GPU opt app v20. Corresponding <count> value for MW project is 0.48
- As mentioned above, You WILL need to edit or create an appropriate app_info.xml file if you run any combination of Astropulse, or Multi-beam applications. - Ensure you choose a build that your CPU/OS will support. Ask for help If you need assistance determining this. - Ensure Boinc & seti@Home applications are already properly functioning on your machine, read carefully the documentation readmes and installation instructions. Known issues: - There is no support for CPUs below SSE3 capability - Borderline OC'ers be aware that you may need to back off to maintain stability, the increased throughput of this application will stress all system components more. - As Always, use these apps AT YOUR OWN RISK.
And most Importantly of all: Thanks to Raistmer for introducing a new ATI GPU-compatible optimized application.
Special thanks go to Jason G and Josef W. Segur for app features, algorithm discussions and useful hints, alpha testers: Arnulf, arkayn, heinz and Urs Echternacht for early spot of some app issues and useful comments about app behaviour, Gipsel for sharing some MW design approaches about sharing GPU between apps and all beta testers who tried app usability on their hosts.
To all of you we value your input and would like to hear from you at Lunatics'

Beta Testing of AstroPulse 5.06 for 64bit and 32bit Linux
Hello!
[updated by Gecko] A Public Beta Test of AstroPulse 5.06 for 64bit and 32bit Linux is available to Squires + in the Public Beta Release Applications section of the Downloads area.
There is one build for Astropulse v5.06 for 64bit linux and sse3 capable CPUs and another especially made for AMD64 SSE2 CPUs for download available. This is for Beta test only, on SaH/AP beta. Update: Three more linux applications for 32bit have been added to the Public Release Beta Test Download section. Please consider a test at SaH/AP beta.
As its unclear how (un)available work is on main, it would be better to start in a smaller circle at beta project for the moment. AP5.06 work should be available in a limited amount on beta project. Please don't forget to revert back to stock beta application after testing.
Do not count on that these are 'release' packages, as they may have hidden issues (or not).
NOT FOR RELEASE. Not Intended for distribution or use on main.
Please if you're attached to beta project, consider thorough testing of this build there, and report issues here.
Thanks, Urs

Most Lunatics use and recommend the use of the evolving 'rebranding' tools to move tasks from GPU to CPU, and hope these tools, and application improvements with respect to the handling of 'very low angle range' tasks, will improve for inclusion in future installer releases.
Lastly, there are many people responsible in the development and testing of this new tool, but the vision & main development is owed to Jason G. A special thanks for the continued dedication of Richard Haselgrove, Josef W. Segur, Raistmer and the Alpha Testing Team. AND.....a big welcome and THANK YOU to the inaugural group of Lunatics member Beta Testers that pitched-in and helped to test multiple installation needs on a variety of platforms. Their testing greatly expedited the trouble-shooting process that allows this release.
Lunatics welcomes your comments and suggestions as to current ease, difficulty, functionality, and suggested improvements for future versions. Please feel free to post here on the boards or @ Seti Main Number Crunching board.
Thanks,
Lunatics Team

Please read the information for "Windows Port of Alex Kan's v8.0 Science App Release" also for more relevant details.
And most Importantly of all: A very long list of people have helped with this build. Top of the list, of course, I'd like to thank Alex for, not only the excellent sources that form the basis for this build, but the critical help in tracking down some important issues early on, and the helpful suggestions and advice throughout this challenging port.
While myself (Jason G), Raistmer and JDWhale ported the code, the true Authors are Alex Kan in combination with the Legacy of development knowledge and history at http://lunatics.kwsn.net . Fragments of knowledge and code from previous lunatics' authors including Simon, Joe, Ben Herndon, Crunch3r and other Contributors been used to make this work. Indeed special thanks go to Joe Segur, whose experience and advice was ever present and helpful throughout, and to Crunch3r for inciting the port in the first place.
Extra thanks go to JDWhale for providing the SSE2 compatibility adjustments, which at this end took, all told (in no particular order): - 1/2 hour to integrate into the source tree, - 1 day to locate testers with old enough AMDs to verify that it works, and - 4 days to clean off the margaritas stains
Great thanks go also to the members of the prerelease test community, who have stuck through countless builds and proved invaluable in refinement. Along with mods & admin over at Lunatics ( Hi Gecko_R7 & KWSN - jonnyv ! )
To all of you we value your input and would like to hear from you at Lunatics'
Regards, Jason

VERY IMPORTANT!!! Note that these applications are meant for ADVANCED USERS. A customized app_info.xml file will need to be properly created and edited if you also run a version of the S@H multi beam application (see below "issues & warnings").
Instructions: AP app_info.xml advanced user instructions
Remember to take into account that these instructions were written for stock AP release. Be sure that you using AP part of app_info.xml downloaded with this opt app release binaries and not sample part that posted on AP advanced users page.
There will be some known issues and warnings to be aware of:
- As mentioned above, you WILL need to edit or create an appropriate app_info.xml file if you run both Astropulse and Multi-beam applications. - An example template for OSX Core2 + SSE3 is HERE MD5: 4d59095413fed232b6835bbb1be8bcfb * For Linux, if you use sse, or sse2 for example, just edit app names accordingly. - Ensure you choose a build that your CPU/OS will support. Ask for help If you need assistance determining this. - Ensure Boinc & seti@Home applications are already properly functioning on your machine, read carefully the documentation readmes and installation instructions.
Known issues: - There is no support for CPUs below SSE capability - Borderline OC'ers be aware that you may need to back off to maintain stability, the increased throughput of this application will stress all system components more. - As Always, use these apps AT YOUR OWN RISK.
And most Importantly of all: Several people have helped make this build possible. First and foremost, Crunch3r, Jason G & Raistmer for leading this effort!!! Build source is located HERE. Special thanks go to Josef W. Segur, Urs Echternacht, Sunu & Richard Haselgrove for their expertise, input & testing of the development builds.
To all of you we value your input and would like to hear from you at Lunatics'.
Regards, Lunatics Team

[Announcements] Sorry for the outage.

Sorry for the multi-day outage. The ISP where we're hosted gave the guy who's providing our hosting new IP addresses, but somehow that information didn't reach us and the ISP didn't realize we were still on the old IP. So when they reclaimed the old IPs, we went offline. Since we're not directly customers of the ISP (a KWSN team member is providing us with colocation for free), tech support for stuff like this is a bit slow.
This also means that lunatics.at is no longer a valid way to reach this site. If you know of anyone still using that address, please let them know about the new url: lunatics.kwsn.net

[Announcements] Gearing up for Multibeam
by Simon
|
27 Jun 2007, 08:50:51 pm |
Hi folks,
Multibeam apps will move to the main SETI@Home project shortly. We have been working on a new app release for a while, and decided to wait until MB was rolled out so we wouldn't have two releases in quick succession.
In any case, whenever the project staff are ready to move Multibeam to main, our new release will follow it in quick succession (or be simultaneous, depending on any last-minute issues).
So keep an eye out on the main S@H boards as well as here, new apps should shortly be incoming.
Regards, Simon.

[Announcements] Stop the madness - run for public office now! (this means you, U.S. citizens)
by Simon
|
16 May 2007, 07:11:26 pm |
Hi folks,
today I read yet another story on how big business is twisting the land of the free into the land of the freely exploitable human resources.
Seems the AG Mr. Gonzales has got it into his head that U.S. citizens should serve sentences up to life imprisonment for the simple act of sharing a piece of copyright-protected media.
Now, there's only one possible way out of this return to the middle ages, slavery and all: Run for office yourself!
Don't let cold-blooded hatemongers rule your lives. Vote with your feet, or get voted for, either way: please make the next elections less of a joke than the last two.
How about a class action suit for fair voting mechanisms up to the Supreme Court, maybe even a direct vote for the president vs. the one by proxy from back when the country was founded?
Forgive my political fervor here, but back when I visited the states for a year in 91/92, it was quite a different country, and I'm not really very old. In my lifetime, it's changed from a place I dreamed of living in to a sad excuse for milking Joe Average to fatten the already overflowing wallets of the richest 1-3% of the populace.
No way can american citizens stand idly by while their freedom is freely sold to whoever bids the most.
Regards, Simon.

[Optimized apps] 64-bit science apps based on Rev-2.2B code released
by Simon
|
13 Apr 2007, 06:15:13 pm |
Hi,
shortly after the 32-Bit Linux app release, here are some 64-bit science apps based on the same code.
They were ported to 64-bit Linux by Crunch3r and have produced reliable and accurate results in all tests.
Performance is better than the equivalent 32-bit apps on Intel systems, on AMD systems it's not as clear; some assembly may be required.
Nota bene - Requirements
- 64-bit Linux 2.6.x - sorry, no 2.4 supported.[/b]
- glibc 2.3.4 or newer - find out what version yours is by typing "/lib/libc.so.6" on a new line - as if you were trying to execute the library itself, that will show you details about your installed glibc version.[/b]
- 64-bit BOINC client - caution: this will limit your choice of other project to participate in at the same time, because not a lot of them offer 64-bit science apps yet.[/b]
64-bit Linux science apps:
SSE2-generic SSE3-Intel-P4/PD SSE3-Intel-Core 2
Double the bits, double the fun ;o) Simon.

[Optimized apps] New compiles of Rev-2.2B code released
by Simon
|
02 Apr 2007, 04:08:06 pm |
Hi folks,
I've uploaded some new compiles of the Rev-2.2B apps.
Contrary to the initial apps, these will not be static/statified, but instead come in two flavours - Kernel-2.4 and Kernel-2.6. Should you still have trouble with libraries and/or segfaults, please post in this thread; still, 2 versions per app should be enough, I hope.
The compilation platform we used, Suse 9.2, is really not all that current - if your libraries are still not recent enough, it's probably high time you upgraded.
The download links remain the same, if you had trouble with the initially released applications, please try these.
Also, the SSE3-P4 app that was initially released has some accuracy problems; if you're running it on any of your hosts, this version is a required upgrade - you'll lose credit and turn in invalid results if you don't upgrade.
Regards, Simon.

[Announcements] Jobs @ Lunatics.at - Developers wanted.
by Simon
|
25 Mar 2007, 10:05:04 am |
First of all, this is a serious job offer. The company I work for is looking to hire new staff - we're expanding and the work load is becoming too much for our development department.
Requirements/needed skills
- PHP coding, JavaScript/CSS
- CVS/Subversion/Repositories - you need to know how to use them
- IDEs: Eclipse, Microsoft Visual Studio
- Adobe Flash+ActionScript+Flex/C#/C++/.NET knowledge is a plus (but not a requirement)
- We're OS-agnostic, as long as you use either Windows, Mac OS X or Linux.
- Job location is in Vienna, Austria (Europe), we will help you with accommodations - this means, you need to move here to get the job.
Our lead developer is from Mexico, we regularly have international people work here on a per-project basis, so we're an international team and all speak English, most of us a second foreign language as well. Still, to live here, you'll probably need to learn to speak German - if you're able to already, it'll be easier for you.
Should you fit the profile, please email simon <at-sign> zadra [dot] org with your job application. Please include a CV (no need to be flamboyant, just the facts, please). University degrees are nice, but no requirement - experience counts.
Please only apply if you are seriously interested and also willing to move here. Of course, you'll get to work with me, too I'll be your resident BOFH (Sysadmin).
Regards, Simon.

[Announcements] Forum Software Upgrade - expected server downtime: 1 hour
by Simon
|
28 Feb 2007, 11:43:35 pm |
Hi folks,
I'm going to take down lunatics.at for maintenance tonight.
Reason - I'm installing an SEO (Search Engine Optimized) modification package for the forums, which I'll later expand for the whole site.
All old links will get redirected and still work. In fact, it's a "permanent" redirect, so the search engines should pick up on it pretty quickly and update their records.
So, in the future, the link
http://lunatics.at/index.php/topic,152.2651.html will look like http://lunatics.at/windows/gpu-crunching-question.msg2651.html instead.
Seems like a small thing, but in terms of search engine hits, it sure isn't
Regards, Simon.
