Latest drivers (NVidia and ATI)
« on: 21 Jul 2009, 11:13:33 pm »

I thought, it would be a well idea to make a thread about the latest nVIDIA_driver and CUDA_VersionSmiley
(Not Beta!)

I saw a new nVIDIA_driver: 190.38 (July 21, 2009)
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_190.38_whql.html
Adds support for OpenGL 3.1
Adds support for CUDA 2.3 for improved performance in GPU Computing applications.
Includes several new control panel features and numerous bug fixes.

Latest nVIDIA_driver:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Latest CUDA_Version: (CUDA Toolkit)
http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html

Hmm.. but where is CUDA_V2.3 ?

If from an other URL for DL (it would be nice if you would post..! Wink), I can use the new CUDA_V2.3 (cudart.dll + cufft.dll) with the current available CUDA_V12_app (with and without VLARkill) and the 'old' libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll ?

Still in nVidia registered developer area only, so no beta tests for apps with that till it's released on the cuda download pages  Wink

Yes, you can use CUDA RT 2.3 with older CUDA MB builds. And you could get nice speedup from that... but you should figure out how to get CUDA RT 2.3 first Smiley
Maybe some inet search will bring some binaries leakage into public. As for official nVidia site AFAIK CUDA 2.3 still unavailable.

ADDON: it's possible that CUDA RT 2.3 release will be today.

Page hasnt been updated but if you manually copy the link and pastes into a new link changing 2_2 to 2_3 everywhere you can get it to download..

Thanks @ all !  Smiley

So it's well to use the CUDA_V2.3 (CUDA_Toolkit) (DL from the dev forum) and use it?

But.. for now I didn't DLed the CUDA_Toolkit. It's only a folder with files ((auto) extraction after DL), or an installation of software?
Because the DL file is an .exe .

I don't want to install more software as needed.
From my experiences, more software -> Windows unstable.  Wink

Maybe update of the Installer with the new .dll's for easier update?  Cheesy

Get only the needed 2.3 dlls in beta downloads here, and get 190.38 driver from nVidia.  Some small speedup at high angle ranges is observed with V12, will be experimenting to see if new compiler makes a better build, or not, for a while.

I have seen people urging everyone (in a number of threads) to update their CUDA dlls. Perhaps this is a silly question, but my 8600GTS is only a CUDA 1.1 device. Why would I want to do this? I'm guessing what I have is as good as it gets. I have the 185 drivers and 2.2 CUDA dlls. Are there any advantages with the new dlls for an old (sheesh, I bought it last year) card?

I normally upgrade just on general principles, but I've always assumed that I'm pushing on a rope for my venerable card  Smiley

1.1 is the hardware 'Compute Capability' not Cuda, Cuda is the language/Libraries used.  While your hardware remains the same, recent rapid development in drivers & Cuda seems to have been fuelled by another certain technology push still to come, which is making underlying driver/library support critical to performance.

In the meantime, my 9800-series cards are also compute capability 1.1, and the new 190.38 drivers plus CUDA 2.3 DLLs have just speeded them up by ~30%.

Same here (9800 GT). Mid-range AR 17.5 min to 12 min, VHAR 7 min to 3 min  Shocked Smiley
Almost offsetting the new increased sensitivity...
