Its time to upgrade......maybe !!!
« on: 16 Jul 2012, 03:13:06 am »

OK folks here my dilemma, I am currently crunching Seti on a mix of Nvida 570 and 580.  Due to running 24/7 they are getting a little flakey, so should I stick with these models and get straight replacements or is there any performance advantage to be gained from stepping upto the 670 and 680 ?

I know what the kitties would do if they had the jing.
Lower power and better crunching from the newer cards.
I am still running some 200 series because I cannot afford the upgrades.
If I had a few extra grand, it would be 600s all the way down.

I know the new cards give more processing power to gamers but does that also translate to better SETI crunching ?

Yes, it does.
If you read a bit in the Seti forums, there are reports of not only better performance, but cooler and quieter running as well.
If I could afford the full upgrade path, some of it would be offset by lower electricity bills.
But, I gotta run what the kitties have available.

not sure if this will help. it gives some information.

As i read it, the GTX 480 is superior to at least some of the
500 and 600 series. i'm not sure how applicable  that forums
results are to GPU number crunching of the sort we do though.

  Running a GTX460 and a GTX560ti here. If i had a spare
$1000.00 USD i'd probably get a pair of GTX670's

I replaced a couple of factory OC'ed GTX570's with a couple of factory OC'ed GTX670's. Use less electricity and produce less heat and they are faster, well running GPUgrid they are.

I have other machines with GTX560Ti's that I am waiting on an equivalent in the GTX600 family for. Not so much for performance but rather to reduce electricity use. Electricity prices have been going through the roof. This month they jumped 18% being mostly blamed on the carbon tax, but in reality the energy providers all adjusted their "service fee" and other changes.

I can say that although my rig is down at the moment, 480's can really deliver, but it takes a lot of power to do it. My twin 480 rig gets anywhere between 83k, and 86k RAC. My rig needs a complete Windows re-install, but the hardware is sound.
